Armenian-French Joint Venture KOTAYK Brewery

Armenian-French Joint Venture KOTAYK Brewery enjoys a great success in selling its production not only in Armenia but abroad as well. The success of the product depends on high-quality raw material.

The superior quality of beers of the brewery of Abovian, recognized by numerous international prizes is due, besides its situation in height (1500 metres), to several factors:

The water of Armenia, one of the first in the world by its quality, from the Katnakhpyur source, which is clean of impurities and excellent in taste and quality.

The barley of Armenias Vardenis region which has the strongest reputation in Armenia.

The KOTAYK Brewery uses high quality malt and hops imported from Europe.

The production is supervised according to the European standards in the perfectly equipped laboratory inside the brewery. This gives a great opportunity to trace the whole process of manufacturing up to the end product.

The KOTAYK Brewery was built by a Czechoslovak company in 1974 during the Soviet age with a view to satisfying the demand of beer of the Caucasian population. Due to its high production capacity of 500 000 hl, the KOTAYK Brewery supplanted the small breweries from neighborhood by offering to the Armenian, Georgian, Azeri and Russian consumers a high-standard beer  produced with the last developments of the Czechoslovak technology in the domain. Since the Armenian independence, this brewery has been affected by the same problems that jeopardized the whole country. In 1996, the owners of the brewery were eventually aware that they would not be able to face alone the lack of funds and the technological deficiency of their company. That was the reason why they looked for a western partner to assist them to face the new challenge of the year 2000. Thanks to its broad international experience, the French group Castel, which had already been very successful in Africa, Russia and Asia, got the bargain because of its know-how. The investment of Castel group (18 million dollars) was one of the first and the most important investments realized in 1997 by a foreign company in Armenia. Today, Mr. Pierre Castel owns 71% of the shares of the KOTAYK Brewery  and Mister Tsaroukian, an Armenian manufacturer, 29 %.
